Nuamah vs. Dumelo: Two actors ‘locked in a duel’ over parliamentary seat
After plying their trades in the make-believe industry for a number of years, Ghanaian actors John Dumelo and Fred Nuamah would rather want to represent their constituents in parliament.
The two would want to speak for their people and find ways of making their lives better.
Although they will be contesting for the same position, the same party, and at the same constituency (Ayawaso West Wuogon), John and Fred are good friends; Fred was actually John’s best man at his wedding in 2019.
For John Dumelo, this is not his first time in the contest. In the 2020 elections, he run for the constituency seat on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) but lost to the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Lydia Seyram Alhassan during the general elections.
Lydia Seyram Alhassan won with 39,851 out of 77,604 total votes while John Dumelo of the NDC had 37,778. An independent candidate got 108 votes.
John was actively involved in party politics as he was seen seriously campaigning on various fronts to win the position.
Fred Nuamah, an actor and business man, is making his debut in the same constituency.
When he announced his intention to run for the NDC parliamentary primaries in the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency, a lot of people wondered what had become of John Dumelo’s politician ambition for the area.
Speculations were rife that he would be going to contest in a new constituency in the Oti Region. To the chagrin of some people, he has made an announcement that he is running for Ayawaso West Wuogon seat for the second time. He calls it “the second coming.”
It is unknown which other people will be battling it out with John and Fred but to the creative arts industry, having the two actors jostle for the slot bodes well for the sector. It has been argued that getting a lot of creatives in parliament will greatly inure to the benefit of the industry because they get to add their voices to policies that will transform the sector.
Aside from acting, John Dumelo has been hugely involved in farming and philanthropy. He has always asserted that one of the surest ways of creating employment is agriculture.
Fred Nuamah, also a business man, is widely known to be the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Movie Awards, a scheme that honours sterling achievements in the film making industry in Ghana.
As the National Democratic Congress (NDC) goes for its presidential and parliamentary primaries on May 13, 2023, all ears will be waiting to hear how they perform in the elections.
